The Traveling Hair Stylists is a team of independent, skilled professionals traveling across the U.S. to support fellow stylists during pivotal moments in their lives: whether that’s maternity leave, medical leave, or any extended time away from behind the chair. 

Our mission is simple yet powerful: to offer peace of mind to stylists stepping away from their business, knowing their clients and space are in trusted, capable hands.

By maintaining their booth rent, nurturing their clientele, and honoring the integrity of their work, we allow stylists to fully embrace their time off to rest, recover, and return on their own terms.

The goal is to maximize client retention for the stylists we cover. By hiring The Traveling Hair Stylists, you indirectly nurture the clientele you have worked so hard to build. We seamlessly adapt to your salon environment, unique routines, and client relationships while bringing our flair and additional knowledge. All of this starts with a discovery call so that we can learn more about you and determine if this is the right fit for you and your business. Once we determine this and a contract is signed, we begin to prepare. This time consists of us gathering information on your products and formulas, establishing our schedule, and setting up virtual or in-person shadow days.

Your clients stay on their regular schedules in a space they know and love, and most importantly, they feel genuinely taken care of. We've found they’re not just relieved; they’re grateful that their stylist took the time to prepare them with our services and bring an experienced stylist who understands their hair needs and formulas.

This concept is fresh to the industry, but we’ve been paving the path since 2022. Behind the scenes, we’ve built the systems, trust, and legal structure to operate in all 50 states. Every stylist on our team carries multi-state liability insurance, adheres to reciprocity and endorsement license guidelines, and operates as an independent contractor fully supported by the company. This means that each of our team members subleases for the stylist they are covering the leave for, which allows us to cover your rent 100% and maintain your suite or station within the salon with your clientele.

We provide everything our contractors need: legal agreements, travel stipends, licensing resources, and guidance every step of the way. We also provide temporary housing resources available in every area so that you can choose what best suits your individual needs in order to fulfill contracts. But the best part is that we offer an experience. The chance to explore new cities, connect with other creatives, and be a part of a career path filled with fulfillment and change.

Ultimately, our passion is to change the industry regarding salon leaves and new opportunities for stylists. This company was started by Leisha Thompson, who had been exploring ways to travel more while still doing her craft as a stylist and earning an income. The idea came from friends and co-workers in the industry. She watched co-workers go through unexpected surgeries, resulting in long recovery times and returning to a loss of their clients. Co-workers who would stress about upcoming maternity leaves because of the uncertainty of timing and if clients would come back.  Many stylists would either push their health aside or take extremely short leaves because they felt they couldn’t risk their business by being gone too long or couldn’t afford to keep up with expenses. 

We know that there are not many resources for stylists, many of us can’t afford health insurance on our own, and currently, only 13 states provide financial support to self-employed stylists through PFML. Short-term disability plans are tough to be accepted into and can sometimes have long wait periods before you can receive any financial support. Although financial support is certainly one concern, we are a client-based business, so maintaining as many clients as possible for stylists is a huge asset that we can offer. The industry needed a change; we needed a real resource that genuinely understands the hurdles stylists face when approaching a leave. This is where The Traveling Hair Stylists was born.
